Glass

The glass industry is the main outlet for potassium carbonate or K2CO3. The product is used in high quality, high value glasses such as optical glasses and lead crystal. Potassium carbonate helps to control refractive index and scatter in lens, prisms, etc. For these particular applications, a high quality potassium carbonate with low concentrations of iron and cobalt is needed.

Because of its superior fluxing properties in the presence of barium and strontium oxides used to screen out X-rays, potassium carbonate is also used for the production of the glass of cathode ray tubes (CRT glass) for television sets and computer screens. It represents a major market for potassium carbonate.
