Chemistry Technician

·         Sample preparation.  Log samples and check request sheet for accuracy.  Label sample bottles and split samples aseptically to provide chemistry and microbiology samples.  Store retained samples and clean counter/floor when sample preparation is complete.

·         Chemistry set-up for bloom, viscosity, pH, and clarity.  Perform according to test instructions.

·         Perform extra non-standard testing as needed – viscosity breakdown, gel power, isoelectric, isoionic, dissolution, gliding, XF filter samples, etc.

·         Prepare and send samples for outside laboratory testing.

·         Clean and wash all used glassware and utensils.  Coordinate with Chemistry Float Technician.

·         Clean, calibrate, and maintain equipment as needed and as assigned by Supervisor.

·         Record all data on lab worksheets, request sheets and in databases.

·         Peer review of paperwork generated by other technicians.

·         Assist Chemistry Float Technician as needed.

·         Project work as allowed/scheduled and other tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

Chemistry Float Technician

·         Sample preparation, including late samples. Label sample bottles and split samples aseptically to provide chemistry and microbiology samples.  Store retained samples and clean counter/floor when sample preparation is complete.

·         Enter straight lot weights into Monitor Weight form.  Print and place micro form with micro samples.  Weigh and blend Chemistry Monitor Composites.

·         Make composite samples when required.

·         Perform routine daily production testing: Peroxide, moisture, ash, conductivity, and insoluble matter, odor panel according to test instruction.

·         Perform routine by-product testing: responsible for all grease samples, volatile solids & ash. Perform all according to test instructions.

·         Assist Chemistry Tech to ensure all extra testing is completed in a timely manner.

·         Clean and wash all used glassware and utensils.  Coordinate with Chemistry Tech.

·         Clean, calibrate, and maintain equipment as needed and as assigned by Supervisor.

·         Record all data on lab worksheets, request sheets and in databases.

·         Order supplies as needed.  Coordinate with Microbiology Float Technician.

·         Project work as allowed/scheduled and other tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

Microbiology Technician

·         Make monitor composite according to spreadsheet with straight lots.

·         Microbiology set-up:  Perform all according to test instructions.

·         Read plates and prepare laboratory for required testing.

·         Gram stain/bacterial identification as needed. 

·         Collect and test environmental samples. Coordinate with QA Officer on additional testing as needed.

·         Record all data on lab worksheets, request sheets and in databases.

·         Peer review of paperwork generated by other technicians.

·         Project work as allowed/scheduled and other tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

Media Preparation Technician (Intern Position)

·         Prepare sterile microbiological media needed for testing using an autoclave and/or hot plate according to directions.  Must know aseptic technique.  Media may be in the form of plates, bottles, or tubes – agar or broth.  Supply Micro Technician with a negative blank for each load and type of sterile media.

·         Clean, sterilize and dry sample bottles.  Must maintain an adequate supply of sterile sample bottles for finished product areas.

·         Kill used media in the autoclave.  Clean bottles by hand or dishwasher.

·         Record all data for autoclave in Lab Notebook.  Mandatory for media traceability.

·         Manage sterile sample inventory – dump samples when cleared and wash/sterilize bottles.

·         Clean and wash all containers used by Microbiology Technician and Process Technician

·         Interact with Micro Technician for media planning vs. work load to maintain adequate levels of media.

·         Maintain adequate inventory of all media (dried and prepared) – audit weekly to ascertain inventory level.

·         Clean, calibrate, and maintain media equipment as needed and as assigned by Supervisor.  Autoclave filter must be cleaned daily or more often as needed.

·         Assist with supplies inventory storage.

 

Profile

This position requires 2 years of laboratory experience or a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, food science or related field with applicable laboratory class work.

This position also requires:

  • Strong time management  
  • Good math and computer skills
  • Good oral and written communication recommended.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory skills such as; weighing, aseptic transfer, following SOPs, reporting results.
